About Josefine

Josefine is an M.C.A. (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) coded vessel which means she is licensed to carry up to 12 passengers for day trips and can accommodate up to 7 people for overnight cruises at sea.

Josefine's weight (40 tonnes) and long keel mean that she is very stable compared to modern yachts, making her ideal if you are new to sailing.

In her home waters of Plymouth Sound she can be chartered for shorter sailing trips taking in such places as Cawsand, Kingsand, the Eddystone light house, Bovisand Bay, Jennycliff, the Mewstones, Whitsand Bay, Rame head, Drakes Island, Devonport or up the rivers of the Lhyner and Tamar.

Charter cruises further a field are available in the South West of England, covering the beautiful unspoilt coastal areas of Devon, Cornwall, the Scilly Isles, Brittany France, and the Channel Islands.

She has ample deck space for you to promenade during your sail, but the most popular place to be is the aft deck – a spacious cushioned seating area at the stern where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the view of Josefine in full sail.
Below deck there are berths for up to 7 people (on overnight trips the wheelhouse becomes the crew quarters), a spacious galley, the heads (toilet), a shower, and of course the engine room.

If you can’t live without your mobile or MP3 player Josefine has 12V DC sockets in the wheelhouse for use at sea, and when she is plugged into shore power, or our 1kVA generator, the 240V AC sockets below decks can be used.

A Short History of Josefine

Josefine, a Danish Kotter, was built by Anderson and Ferdinandsen in Denmark and first registered in 1931.

She is constructed of oak on oak, and rigged as a gaff ketch. Her first 40 years were spent ring seine fishing in the Baltic and North Sea, and she was often away for weeks at a time before returning to port with a live catch.
In 1975 she was re-commissioned as a sail-training vessel, working out of Denmark until 1989 when she was re-registered under the British flag and relocated to the south coast of England.

Between 2000-2002 she was completely rebuilt and refitted on the south coast, and then relocated to Gibraltar. In 2003 she was purchased by the 10th and present custodian, Charles Atkinson, who sailed her with the help of a few friends, from Gibraltar to Watchet Somerset.

In June 2009 Josefine relocated to Plymouth from Watchet where she now enjoys the clear blue waters of the South Coast all year round.

Special thanks are extended to all those involved with Josefine, past, present and future, including:
